QUESTIONS
Before you ask
Do I need to register for VAT?
It’s compulsory once your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period. You can also register voluntarily below that if it suits your business — worth a conversation either way.
What's the difference between the VAT schemes?
Standard VAT means you pay the difference between VAT charged and VAT paid. Flat Rate simplifies this to a fixed percentage of turnover. Cash Accounting means you only account for VAT when you’re actually paid, not when you invoice. Which suits you depends on your business — we’ll tell you honestly.
What happens if I file late?
HMRC’s penalty points system means each late submission adds a point, and once you hit the threshold, a £200 fine follows — with further fines for each additional late return after that.
Can I reclaim VAT on purchases?
Generally yes, on VAT you’ve paid for business purposes, provided you keep proper records. We check every return for reclaimable VAT you might otherwise miss.
What if my turnover drops below the threshold?
You can apply to deregister, but it’s not automatic — and there are situations where staying registered still makes sense. We’ll talk it through with you.
Can you take over from my current accountant mid-quarter?
Yes. We coordinate the handover directly so there’s no gap in your filing and nothing gets missed between accountants.
